Can a Power Station Run a Sump Pump?

5 min read · By Samuel Guerra · numbers checked at the source ·
Short answer

Yes, if the box can handle the start. One 1/2 horsepower sump pump needs about 2,760 watts for a moment to start and about 960 watts to run, so look for a surge of at least that much (check your pump's label). A 2,048 Wh box like the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max runs it nonstop for about 1.8 hours, and longer when the pump turns on and off.

Yes, a power station can run a sump pump if it can handle the start. One 1/2 horsepower pump needs about 2,760 watts for a moment to start and about 960 watts to keep running, so the box needs a surge of at least 2,760 watts for that pump. Want to check your own mix of devices? Try Find My Power.

A few words first. Watts are how fast something uses power. Watt-hours are how much power a box holds. And surge is a short burst some things need to start. A pump has a motor, and motors need a big surge.

How many watts does a sump pump use?

We use one real pump for our numbers. Liberty Pumps' spec sheet for its 287 sump and effluent pump (1/2 horsepower, 115 volts) lists 8.0 amps while it runs and 23 amps at the moment it starts. By our math, at the 120 volts of a wall outlet, that is about 960 watts running and 2,760 watts to start. You can see the pump on Liberty's product page.

Smaller pumps often need less. Your pump's label lists its amps. Amps times 120 gives you a rough number for its running watts that leans a bit high.

Running watts = amps × 120
Hours = watt-hours × 0.85 ÷ watts

Why 0.85? Some power is lost inside the box when it turns battery power into wall power. Our tools count 85% of the box's watt-hours as usable. Estimates. Your devices may use more or less.

Which power stations can start a sump pump?

Here are seven boxes on our list that can start a 2,760-watt surge, by the maker's surge numbers. The last column assumes the pump runs 10 minutes in every hour, like during a steady rain. That is just an example: time your own pump during a storm.

BoxHoldsSurge (maker)Pumping nonstopIf it runs 10 min each hour
Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 21,024 Wh3,000 Wabout 0.9 hoursabout 5.4 hours
EcoFlow DELTA 31,024 Wh3,600 Wabout 0.9 hoursabout 5.4 hours
Jackery Explorer 1000 v21,070 Wh3,000 Wabout 0.9 hoursabout 5.7 hours
Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 22,048 Wh4,000 Wabout 1.8 hoursabout 11 hours
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max2,048 Wh4,800 Wabout 1.8 hoursabout 11 hours
Jackery HomePower 30003,072 Wh7,200 Wabout 2.7 hoursabout 16 hours
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 34,096 Wh8,000 Wabout 3.6 hoursabout 22 hours

A pump that runs 10 minutes in every hour uses about 160 watt-hours each hour (960 × 10 ÷ 60). That is why the same box lasts about six times longer than when the pump runs nonstop. The box also uses a little power just by being on while the pump rests, so real hours in that column may be shorter.

What about boxes that can't start it? The BLUETTI AC180 lists a surge of 2,700 watts, just under 2,760, so our tools don't count it for this pump. Smaller boxes list lower surges, and a few large boxes don't list a surge at all and give less than 2,760 watts normally. A smaller pump may still work on them: check its label first. You can line up any two boxes on Compare.

Which box would we pick?

We would pick the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max. It holds 2,048 Wh and lists a 4,800-watt surge, so it starts this pump with room to spare. If the pump runs 10 minutes each hour, that is about 11 hours of a storm by our math.

If your storms are short, or your pump is smaller, the EcoFlow DELTA 3 holds 1,024 Wh and lists a 3,600-watt surge. It gives about half the hours of the DELTA 3 Max.

Need a lot more time? The Jackery HomePower 3000 and the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 hold more. For running more of the house, see our whole-home backup guide.

Tips before the storm

  • Check the label. Write down your pump's amps. A 1/3 horsepower pump may need less than our 1/2 horsepower example.
  • Use backup mode if your box has it. All seven boxes in the table list a backup (UPS) switch time of 10 or 20 milliseconds on the maker's page. A millisecond is a thousandth of a second. The box stays plugged into the wall, the pump plugs into the box, and the box takes over when the power goes out.
  • Charge it full before the storm. Our winter storm checklist lists what else to charge.
  • Keep the box dry. Set it up high, away from where water can reach.
  • Follow the manuals. Your pump's manual and the box's manual say how to plug them in. For anything wired into your home, ask a licensed electrician.
  • Count everything you plug in. Every device you add uses part of the box's watts. A microwave alone can need 1,000 to 1,500 watts, by Honda's numbers: see our microwave guide.

Questions people ask

What power station can power a sump pump?

One whose surge is at least as big as the pump's start. For the 1/2 horsepower pump in our example, that means 2,760 watts or more. The seven boxes in the table above all list that much. For a smaller pump, check its label and use Find My Power.

How long will a portable power station run a sump pump?

It depends on how often the pump turns on. Running nonstop, a 2,048 Wh box gives about 1.8 hours. If the pump runs 10 minutes in every hour, the same box gives about 11 hours by our math.

How much generator power do I need to run a sump pump?

For the 1/2 horsepower pump in our example, about 960 watts to run and about 2,760 watts for the start. Your pump may need less. The difference between watts and watt-hours is in our watts vs. watt-hours guide.

What size Jackery do I need for a sump pump?

For our example pump, the Explorer 1000 v2 lists a 3,000-watt surge, so it can start it, but it runs it nonstop for only about 0.9 hours. Jackery also sells sizes in between. The HomePower 3000 lists a 7,200-watt surge and holds 3,072 Wh, about 2.7 hours nonstop. How we pick the numbers is on How we test.
