EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max 500
A small box that holds more than most small ones. It keeps Wi-Fi and phones going for about 12 hours. By our math it does not start a fridge.
- 499 Wh
- Watt-hours: how much it holds
- 500 W
- Watts: how fast it gives power
- 1,000 W
- Surge: a short burst for start-ups
- Checking
- Weight: how heavy to carry
How long it runs your things
Estimates. Your devices may use more or less. One thing at a time, from a full box. We keep 85% of the watt-hours, because some power is lost on the way out.
What we think
The RIVER 2 Max 500 is a small box. It holds 499 watt-hours. Watt-hours are how much power a box holds. It gives up to 500 watts. Watts are how fast something uses power. Its surge is 1,000 watts. Surge is a short burst some things need to start, like a fridge motor.
What that means in an outage
By our math, counting Wi-Fi at 15 watts and phones at 20:
- Wi-Fi and phones: about 12 hours.
- CPAP: about 11 hours, by our math, for a CPAP that uses about 40 watts with the humidifier off or low. Check the watts on your own machine.
These are estimates. Your devices may use more or less.
About fridges
A fridge can need a burst of about 1,200 watts to start. This box's surge is 1,000 watts. So by our math it does not start a fridge.
Why this one and not the RIVER 3 Plus
It holds more: 499 watt-hours here, 286 in the RIVER 3 Plus. By our math that is about 12 hours of Wi-Fi and phones against about 6.9. The RIVER 3 Plus gives more watts, 600 against 500. And EcoFlow says the RIVER 3 Plus takes an extra battery.
Moving it and charging it
EcoFlow gives two weights for this box: 13.2 pounds in one place and 13.4 in another. We're checking. EcoFlow says it charges from empty to full in 60 minutes from the wall.
The limit
500 watts rules out a microwave and a space heater. EcoFlow also lists 1,000 watts for a mode called X-Boost. We count 1,000 only as surge. This box is from EcoFlow's RIVER 2 line, the one before RIVER 3.
We're checking three more things. EcoFlow does not say how many wall outlets the US box has. EcoFlow does not say if you can add an extra battery. And EcoFlow's page for this box does not give its warranty.
Bottom line: a small box for Wi-Fi and phones, or for a CPAP through one night. It does not run a fridge.
Good for
Wi-Fi and phones for about 12 hours, or a CPAP through one night.
Not for
A fridge, a microwave or a space heater. By our math this box does not start a fridge.
